Global versus Local: International Law and Institutions, Customary Law and Human Rights in Africa
Leitner Panel Focuses on Traditional African Legal Systems and the International Human Rights Regime

The Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School hosted a panel, “Global versus Local: International Law and Institutions, Customary Law and Human Rights in Africa,” as part of International Law Weekend held at Fordham Law School on October 22. The panel explored the complex relationship between traditional African legal systems and the international human rights regime. Many international rules and standards face challenges when implemented in local contexts, particularly in the field of human rights. The panel discussed the challenges and opportunities for international human rights standard penetration to the community level, focusing primarily on promoting standards’ relevance and impact for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

Professor Paolo Galizzi, associate clinical professor of law and director of the Sustainable Development Legal Initiative at the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School moderated the panel. The panelists included Anna Bossman, Deputy  Commissioner of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice of Ghana; Muna B. Ndulo, Professor of law, and Director of the Institute for African Development at Cornell University Law School; and Dr Thoko Kaime, lecturer in law and deputy director of the Surrey International Law Centre School of Law, at the University of Surrey.
